As summer approaches, many people start to feel the heat. Some methods for keeping cool — like opening windows and using fans — can be ineffective. So how can you keep your home and body cool and comfortable in summer?
Whether you’re spending time outdoors or indoors, here are eight ways to beat the heat and stay cool in summer.
1. Stay hydrated
Drinking lots of water will help your body stay cool in summer. When it’s hot, you sweat more. As sweat evaporates off the surface of the skin, you’ll start to cool down. So it’s important to replace the liquid lost to maintain a cool body temperature.
Drink plenty of water, but also eat foods with a high water content, such as watermelon, cucumbers, and tomatoes.
2. Wear light clothes
This may seem obvious, but it’s important to choose your clothes carefully to stay cool. This doesn’t just mean wearing t-shirts and shorts instead of jumpers and jeans. Certain fabrics — like linen and cotton — are more breathable than others, like denim and polyester. So these are better choices for staying cool in summer.
Wear light colours to reflect sunlight away from your body, and protect your face from the sun by wearing a brimmed hat and sunglasses.
3. Stay indoors (or in the shade)
Staying out of the sun is a key way to keep cool. If you can, stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day. If you need to be outside, find a shady spot during the midday hours. Create your own shade using canopies or parasols if needs be.
Do any high-energy activities in the morning or evening, when the air gets cooler. This will prevent you from overheating.
4. Switch on the air con
Air conditioning isn’t common in houses in the UK. But if you have it, now’s the time to use it. Air con helps regulate the air temperature in homes, shops, and offices. Change the filters regularly to make sure your air con unit runs efficiently and effectively.
If you don’t have an air con unit, there are several alternatives to air con you can use to keep your environment cool instead.
5. Get an Eazy Breeze
If you don’t want to invest in a costly air con system, an Eazy Breeze could be the ideal solution for keeping cool in summer.
This inexpensive device affixes to your windowsill and pushes your curtains or blinds away from the window, allowing a steady flow of cool air to enter your room, without letting in any hot sunlight.
6. Take a cool shower or bath
Lower your body temperature by showering or bathing in cool water. This can help you feel much more comfortable in summer, especially if you shower in the morning and in the evening (or even more if necessary). This is a great way to stay cool in your caravan or motorhome, where you may not have access to air con.
7. Keep oven use to a minimum
Using your oven or stove can quickly heat up your environment, especially in a smaller space like a caravan. Avoid cooking for long spells at the hottest times of the day, and open windows and doors to let some of the heat escape (an Eazy Breeze can make this even more effective).
8. Use cooling sprays and mists
Lots of pharmacies and supermarkets sell cooling sprays that can help you cool down when you’re on the go. Miniature fans, cooling gel pads, and cooling towels can all provide relief from the heat wherever you are.
