The New Maxview Roam 5G and its 4×4 antenna

We’ve just released our Maxview Roam 5G motorhome and caravan WiFi system. To give maximum speeds on 5G, it’s necessary to have a 4×4 antenna which, in layman’s terms, means 4 antennas and 4 cables.

We have also released a 5G version using our popular Campervan antenna. This antenna is 2×2, though if you need the smaller footprint on your roof, this will still be super fast on 5G.

What’s the difference between a 2×2 and a 4×4 antenna?

You may have seen these terms flying around when looking for a 4G/5G antenna for your caravan or motorhome and maybe wondered if a 4×4 antenna is one that’s more suitable for going off-road…

Well you’d be forgiven for thinking so, but it essentially means how many antennas are in the enclosure.

A 2×2 antenna has two antennas and two cable outputs:

 

A 2×2 antenna and router can pick up decent 3G and 4G signals. But it’s not as effective in picking up 5G signals as a 4×4 antenna. Which is why we’ve developed a new generation of 4G and 5G antennas for caravans and motorhomes.

What is a 4×4 motorhome WiFi antenna?

A 4×4 antenna consists of four antennas and four cables:

This makes it far more capable of picking up better, faster, stronger 5G signals. In fact, a 4×4 antenna can make your 5G connection up to 100% faster than a 2×2 antenna. Plus, if you’re not in an area that supports 5G, it can also improve 4G speeds. So it’s well worth the upgrade if you spend a lot of time in your caravan or motorhome.

How do antennas work with 5G motorhome WiFi routers?

The Roam 5G WiFi system is a 4G and 5G router with an external 4G and 5G 4×4 antenna. With the antenna being 4×4, it can support 4 streams of data via one WiFi channel. A 2×2 antenna supports 2 streams.

The router uses a technology called MU-MIMO — that’s multi-user, multiple-input, multiple-output — meaning you can have a lot going on inside your vehicle, including TVs, iPads, Facetime, and the system will be able to handle it.

Do you need a 5G motorhome router?

5G is the next generation network. But there’s already extensive coverage in the UK, particularly in towns and cities. EE currently has the most 5G coverage of any UK network. This map shows where EE 5G is currently available:

So unless you’re travelling to rural areas of Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland you may already be able to connect to 5G. Upgrading to a full capability 5G router makes your connection that much faster.

Most other major UK networks also offer 5G in certain regions, including Three, Vodafone, and O2. They currently have less coverage than EE, but you’ll still be able to connect in cities and most major towns.

5G will soon be the most popular network type in the UK, especially as 3G networks are gradually phased out. So upgrading your WiFi system now will futureproof it for years to come.

Rural 5G vs city 5G

Currently, 5G coverage is mostly available in cities and towns. This is so urban areas can support the development of smart cities and other online ventures that bring in massive investment and interest. Unfortunately, boosting internet speeds for caravan users isn’t the priority.

But coverage is expanding, so people looking for better rural broadband and internet speeds may find 5G capability is more widespread in the next few years.

You can expect the biggest jumps in internet speed in cities, thanks to the higher frequency wavelengths here. When 5G is expanded to rural areas, it will use frequencies similar to those used for 4G. So in reality, your speeds will remain similar to those you get on 4G.
